A horse is a horse of course & a Giveaway!

Diane ListenGive me food and drink; and care for me. And when the day's work is done, shelter me. Give me a clean bed and leave me not too small a place in the stable. Talk to me, for your voice often takes the place of reins. Be good to me and I shall serve you more gladly and love you.

Ever since I was a kid, I’ve loved horses. I finally was able to live my dream of having a horse about 8 years ago. Then a few years ago, I fell off, broke a few ribs and punctured a lung, and the dream pretty much ended there! I don’t have my horse anymore, but I have a beautiful picture of her on my gallery wall in the hallway, and memories of lots of good rides together (a couple of not-so-good ones too!)

As you may have noticed, equine art is a huge trend in home decor at the moment. At IDS11 last week, there were some artisans displaying big & beautiful equine art {sorry, I don’t know the names of the artisans. If anyone does, please let me know!}

What makes equine art so appealing? Well, a big part of it is because it isn’t really masculine or feminine – horses appeal to both sexes. They also appeal to both children and adults. And a picture of  horse in the dining room or living room is sort of unexpected – not the more typical landscape or abstract painting.

I’m planning to hang a piece of equine art in my hopefully-soon-to-be-finished dining room. I’ve narrowed the choices down to two photographs by Diane Schuller, an amazing photographer in Grand Prairie, Alberta. Diane recently decided to specialize in animal photography, with her focus on dogs and horses. Here are just a few of Diane’s beautiful photos…

  1. Am I the first one??? Does #1 ever win? I hope so - I WANT THAT PHOTO! It would be perfect for my daughter's room {actually both girls} They ride for fun and Diane's photos are AMAZING! Hard to pick a favourite but I love the one with the photo of a man's legs and the dog lying at his feet, or one of the back view of a dog and you just catch a glimpse of his ear, OR the one you have on this blog with the stirrup and saddle!

  2. Kelly, I love Diane's work. Thank you for introducing us to her. All her photos are beautiful, but I loved the "peekaboo" of the two horses, and the view through yellow flowers of the dog swimming. Hoping to win your fabulous giveaway. I want to give it to my best friend who is hoping to fulfill her lifelong dream of living on a horse ranch in AZ. Thanks for the opportunity!

  5. Kelly,

    Diane's art is amazing. The one I love did not have a name, it was a horse in motion which she showed in color and B & W/ loved the black & white.

    The giveaway is truly my fave though, she captures the essence,

    xoxo

  19. Hi Kelly,
    I love the Listen photo. I like the greys and soft tones and it would look fab in my 3 year old daughter's room as we are redecorating her room this spring. She is in love with horses and is after daddy to buy her one. Unfortunately 3\4 of an acre is not quite large enough so a stick pony will have to do.

  29. Hi there! Wow!!! So glad to have been directed to this and Diane's site! The horse art is just gorgeous. My favorite on Diane's site is the one with several horses with tousled manes as part of the bedroom decor. On this page, I love the one that is similar, but is set in the dining room. Large close-ups of these beautiful creatures add so much to a room. Beautiful. Thanks for sharing! :)

  33. Kelly, we have horses in common. I had horses as a kid, then returned to it as an adult. I had a bad fall when I was pregnant (didn't know it) and stopped for many years. Then a couple of years ago, I started again, but I've decided not to pursue it. Just too risky. But I have lots of wonderful memories though.

  39. Hi Kelly -- Love this post, even without the giveaway! But since I am a fellow crazy horse love as well, I would definitely like to be in the running for that artwork ;)

    I vistied Diane's blog and really like the wedding photo with the bride and groom going off into the fields (with the antique finish)- she has a great eye for those types of pics. Generally though I am a fan of close-ups of a horse's eye, or ears, etc. They have more of a modern [artsy] feel to them! diana @ indulgeinteriors . ca
