Lofty celebrations: The Reveal! (A PARA Paints Blog Crew project)

sectional lounge end pm

In yesterday’s blog post, I told you the “Before” story of our loft makeover. And today is the “After” – a day I’ve been looking forward to for almost twelve years! Who says I don’t have any patience? ;-)

So the story left off with Charles the orange sectional and some blue colour chips. And what colour did I decide on? The loft is primarily a home theater, so I wanted to go dark on the walls. I decided on PARA Paints Rainy Skies. The trim is Climb The Mast.

I have to admit, I had an “OH MY GOD, WHAT HAVE I DONE?!” moment when the painter (a friend of ours)started rolling on the first coat. But as the old colour disappeared under Rainy Skies, I loved the transformation more and more. The dark blue went onto the walls and right up onto the vaulted ceiling – which you might think would make the room feel small, but the dark ceiling actually makes it feel like there’s no ceiling at all – it’s like you’re looking up at the night sky.

When the painting was done, it was time to have some decorating fun! Which was a bit of a challenge, because I really couldn’t condone going out and buying new stuff when we already have so much stuff in our house. The only things I bought are the cushions and orange throw and a piece of art. And we bought a few pieces of furniture at Ikea to hold the media components. Otherwise, everything in the loft came from somewhere else in the house.

I slightly modified my plan to create a reading nook with a chaise:

And opted for a leather arm chair, cow print foot stool, and small side table. I prefer to buy original art, but the colours in this piece were perfect and for $15 at HomeSense, it was too good a deal to pass up :-)

I put my telescope in the opposite nook.

This little seating area in the corner has two more leather arm chairs, an orange ceramic drum stool (originally bought for the back patio), and a floor lamp. I couldn’t resist buying the orange bicycle cushion :-) A triptych I bought years ago from my friend & artist Matt LeBlanc will go on the wall above the chairs.

When we bought the sectional for our family room a couple of years ago, we needed to put the sofa somewhere. Of course, it ended up in our loft, the home for wayward furniture :-)

Originally, the colour scheme was going to be navy blue, orange, and purple. But I really liked the bright green on the floral cushion, and decided to add more bright green. This green & black plaid throw that I bought last summer in PEI at MacAusland’s Woolen Mills is the perfect addition :-) And it keeps me warm when I’m watching a movie!

A couple of years ago, I convinced hubby to make a metal & wood table like the Brickmaker’s tables at Restoration Hardware that are way out of my price range. My original plan was to use scraps of wood that we already had for the top, but then we found a beautiful piece of live edge spalted maple at KJP Select Hardwoods that I loved. It wasn’t quite wide enough for the metal base that hubby already made, so he added a strip of a dark African hardwood down the middle.

A few years ago, I bought four chairs and a pedestal table from Kijiji. We refinished the table and refinished & reupholstered the chairs, and now they have a new home in the loft as a games table.

Of course, you can’t have a home theater without a big-screen TV, right? Well, hubby grabbed the motto go big or go home and ran with it – he bought a projector and used Screen Goo to paint a HUGE 12’ wide screen on the wall. To hold all the components, we bought three tables at Ikea – a LACK TV bench and two LACK coffee tables – and lined them up together. The bench in the middle was shorter than the coffee tables, so hubby added pieces of oak to the bench legs to make it the same height.

With a dark colour on the walls and ceiling, you really get an experience similar to watching a movie in a theater (especially at night when there’s no sunlight in the room).

It took 12 years, but our loft has finally been transformed from a big empty unfinished space into a room that’s perfect for watching  movies and sports and entertaining friends. Who wants to come over on Saturday night for a game of Rock Band? ;-)

Thank you PARA Paints and Bonds Decor for providing the paint :-)

Coincidentally, Rachel at Hue recently wrote this blog post about why it’s best to paint a media room a dark colour. Rachel, I couldn’t agree more! :-)

An art gallery in my house

My friend, artist Matt LeBlanc, and author/singer, songwriter Rémi Boudreau are currently bringing their INSPIRATION tour to cities in New Brunswick, Quebec, and Ontario. Kinda like rock stars, but minus the roadies and the groupies ;-) On Tuesday night, Matt and Rémi brought their tour to Ottawa, and I was lucky enough to host my first-ever art party. An hour after they arrived, Matt had transformed my house into an art gallery. A very clean and tidy art gallery, if I do say so myself – and it only took five straight days of mega-cleaning. UGH! Anyway, everywhere I looked, there were fabulous pieces of art…

As the host of the party, I had a tough act to follow. Monday’s party in Westmount included guests like Debbie Travis and billionaire Guzzo Cinema owner Angelo Guzzo.

Sadly, I don’t know any famous designers or billionaires. But even so, I think the party at my place was pretty cool & fun – how could it not be with the best party girls in town in attendance? YAY TBBs! And where there’s TBBs, there’s wine…

And there were cupcakes…

…lots of cupcakes…

This picture just cracks me up. Can you see why?

At first, it looks like a room full of girls. But there’s Jackson on the sofa, looking all serious and like he’s thinking about what painting to buy! The dog thinks he’s a human :-) And here’s Matt with Squirt (he thinks this picture is terrible, but I like it). I bought the paintings you see behind him way back in 2007. It’s really cool to see how his art has evolved since then.

Rémi sang a set of five songs, which were very touching and meaningful, because they’re about his life.

Many lessons, hard lessons, had to be learned for me to be able to take my previous life, which was motivated by the outside, and transform it into a life that is now “Inspired from the Inside”. This album is, in many ways, a personal diary of this rewarding journey of mine. All that I hope is that it will inspire you to live the life you were born to live…YOURS. ~ Rémi Boudreau ~

It was great seeing my friend Matt again and meeting Rémi for the first time. They’re both so friendly, warm, and fun, not to mention extremely talented. Matt & Rémi are bringing their tour to Toronto and London next – if you have a chance to attend one of their parties, don’t miss out!  You can find the information on Matt’s web site.

And on a totally different note, now that I’m back to blogging here at JAX regularly, I’ve decided to make some design changes. So if things look a little wonky at times, that’s me playing around with the HTML code and probably messing things up ;-)

Happy weekend!

Decorating The Homework Club with art

Tomorrow is the big day – the TBBs will be doing the Extreme Makeover: Kindness Edition 2012 installation at the Foster Farm Family House Homework Club. And apparently lots of cleaning too. Not so excited about that part, but VERY excited to see the design plan come together! I’m also excited that we have some awesome donors who are going to help us decorate The Homework Club with art.

Posterjack.ca is transferring these drawings by three of The Homework Club kids to canvases. Such a great way to ensure that these drawings will last a lifetime.

If you’d like to preserve your kid’s artwork, check out the great options at Posterjack.ca – they can mount any digital image onto canvas, metal, birch wood, and even acrylic.

Sheila Cain has donated a print of one of her amazing pencil drawings – this is “Harley” :-)

For the second year in a row, artist Matt LeBlanc has donated one of his awesome abstract paintings. It’s currently in transit and will be arriving later today. We won’t actually see it till tomorrow, but it should look a little something like this:

Matt has the hugest heart of anyone I know, and I’m so honoured to call him my friend :-) He has donated paintings to numerous charities and good causes, and a couple of years ago he raised $38,000 for cancer research with his Art For Life Campaign. Earlier this week, Matt resigned from his job at an advertising agency to focus on his art full-time. You might want to snap up one of his paintings now before he becomes uber-famous and charges millions of dollars for his work!

And finally, I thought it would be fun to create a painting for The Homework Club, inspired by our grey & red colour palette.

Thank you Tim & Posterjack.ca, Sheila, and Matt! And also THANK YOU to the following people who donated the last few pieces that we needed to complete our project design:

Tina Klein Welsh Dictionaries

Sending you all great big virtual hugs!

And seeing as it’s Kindness Week, I think I’ll send out more hugs to everyone, just because :-) It would be great if you would share this video and pass the hugs along to your blog readers. It’s a great way to spread the kindness and make people smile – or cry, because it’s just so darn emotional listening to ♫ Hallelujah ♫ and watching complete strangers hug!

Like Ellen says, Be Kind!

Kate & Kelly’s Great Blog Recipe Exchange

My blog friend Kate at manningroad is always posting pictures of her yummy culinary creations. I've asked her to send me more than one of her recipes, and her recipe for baked oatmeal has now found a spot in my breakfast rotation:-) So I thought, why not take the recipe thing a step further, and asked Kate if she’d be interested in doing a blog recipe exchange where we can swap recipes with other bloggers. Kate was all for it, and so with no further ado, I’m pleased to announce…

recipe card with text

It’s easy to participate – all you have to do is post one of your favourite recipes on your blog, and then link it up to our Great Blog Recipe Exchange party happening one week from today on Wednesday, March 23rd. Make the rounds of all the participating blogs, and you’ll end up with a whole new recipe repertoire :-)

To make things as easy as possible, you don’t have to actually cook your recipe – although we certainly encourage posting pictures to go along with your recipe. So if you can manage to whip up a batch of your favourite stew or cookies and snap some pics, all the better :-)

Kate and I will both be posting link widgets on our blogs next Wednesday, so you can participate through either of our blogs.

And just to whet your appetite, I’m going to share my ultimate chocolate chip cookie recipe with you right now…

Triple-Threat Chocolate Chip Cookies

1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened
1 cup brown sugar
3/4 cup white sugar
2 large eggs, beaten
2 tbsp. milk*
2 tsp. vanilla extract*
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
3/4 tsp. salt
2 cups oats
2 cups (or more) combination of chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, and Skor bits

* For an adult version, replace vanilla with Crème de Cacao and milk with Bailey’s Irish Cream.

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Line two large cookie sheets with parchment paper or spray with Pam.
  3. In a large bowl, use a wooden spoon to combine butter, brown sugar, and white sugar.
  4. Add eggs, milk, and vanilla and stir until just combined.
  5. In a medium sized bowl, combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add to butter & sugars in large bowl and stir until just combined.
  6. Add oats and stir until combined.
  7. Add chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, and Skor bits and stir until combined.
  8. Use a dessert spoon to drop cookie dough onto cookie sheets. Leave about 2” between each cookie (cookie dough will spread).
  9. Put one sheet onto middle rack in oven and bake for about 5 minutes.
  10. After 5 minutes, turn the sheet 180 degrees and place on upper rake. Put second sheet of cookies on middle rack and bake both sheets for about 5 minutes (about 10 minutes total cooking time for each sheet). Cookies on top rack are ready when the edges are just barely brown and the center looks slightly unbaked.
  11. Remove top sheet from oven, turn other sheet 180 degrees and place on upper rack. Continue this rotation until all cookies are baked.
  12. Let cookies cool on sheet for a few minutes, then carefully remove cookies with spatula and let cool completely on a wire rack.

********************************************************

And just to change the subject completely for a minute… you might remember that my friend, artist Matt LeBlanc, raised $38,000 for cancer research with his Art For Life Campaign last year. YAY MATT! He recently put together a video featuring 25 artists from around the world to promote cancer awareness. Please take a few minutes to check out the video…

See you next Wednesday with your favourite recipe!
