A Breath of Fresh Air

Benjamin Moore’s Colour of the Year for 2014, that is…

BM IAP_fh_ColorTrends2014_CA

Do you love Breath of Fresh Air? I do! It makes me think of the beach and the ocean and the sky and a bubbling brook and the sunny and fun days of summer. These are some rooms that I’ve pinned to my Coastal Inspiration board on Pinterest – not necessarily Breath of Fresh Air, but similar beautiful blues that invoke that sweet coastal feeling…

I may be just a bit biased, but I think Benjamin Moore hit this colour trend dead on.

I’m convinced that our next house is going to be by the ocean, and I’m going to paint it beautiful shades of watery blue. It’s refreshing, soothing, and oh so pretty :-)

What colour would you choose to be the colour of the year for 2014?

DIY Maritime map letters

I’m sure you’ve seen cute map letters like these ones from Not On The High Street:

original_noths-05_0067-WIN10-036-D-BOMBAS-LETTERS

The price of these letters – not so cute. Five letters cost close to $150.00, and that doesn’t include shipping from England. Insane! But no worries, this a super-easy project to do yourself for a fraction of the price.

B pm Being a beach & ocean lover, I wanted my map letters to have a Maritime theme. Now, in theory, this project should have been fast and easy – glue map to wood letters, DONE! But thanks to my:

  1. inability to focus on one thing for more than five minutes,
  2. habit of making things 20 times more complicated than they need to be, and
  3. an ingrained need for perfection,

everything I do takes longer than it should.

(Have I mentioned that I’m a little on the OCD side? Picture Sheldon on The Big Bang Theory with boobs. Yep, that’s me. So overall, I probably spent a few hours creating creating my map letters – not including waiting time between a couple of steps – but it was really simple and straightforward.)

I bought the white wood letters

B  E  A  C  H

at Michaels for 50% off (I think they were around $3.50 each). I totally forgot to take a “before” picture of them – DOH! But you know the kind of wood letters I mean:

I searched the Net for some maps of beaches that I’ve been to. Originally I was going to do use a separate map for each letter, but then I came across this whopper map of the Maritimes:

Maritimes-Map

I like the soft colours and old look to the map. And after I printed it out on 16 sheets of 8-1/2” x 11” paper, I realized I could fit each letter onto an area of the map that I’ve been to – PEI, Cape Breton, and three other areas in Nova Scotia (including my beloved Lunenburg region).

Once I figured out where I wanted each letter to go, I cut out each section from the original map image on my computer using Paint and printed out the map section for each letter on its own sheet of paper. That way, I wouldn’t have to cut off the white borders and try to match up seams between sheets of paper.

B-map pm Map section for the letter B

Next, I traced out each letter onto the map section that I printed out for it and cut the letters out.

I painted the sides of all the letters a light bluey-green. I realized after the fact that I didn’t get any good pictures of the painted letters. DOH again! Anyway, after the paint dried, I used Mod Podge to attach each map letter  onto each wood letter. And voila, Maritime map letters!

BEACH4

I used a little creative license with the A – I turned PEI about 70 degrees so I could fit more of of the island onto the letter.

And I made sure to fit my very favourite part of the Maritimes onto one of the letters – this is the Lunenburg region in Nova Scotia on the letter E:

I still haven’t sealed my map letters. I need to try out some different types of sealers first to see which one works best with paper. I’m thinking either a clear water-based poluyurethane, Mod Podge, or a spray sealer, Any suggestions?

I could live here: Rustic with a touch of coastal charm

A few days ago, I fell in love with this room that I saw on Facebook:

LR 2 big

The rustic wood beams & ceiling & door, the comfy looking sofas, the pretty watery blue striped fabric and accents… I just want to want to jump right into this picture!

I did a bit of Googling and discovered that the room was designed by Toronto designer Jill Kantelberg. And there are more pictures of this beautiful home on her web site. Wanna take a look? OK, let’s go!

Here’s another view of the living room that shows the gorgeous stone fireplace.

How awesome is that huge window in the kitchen?

Love the wood frame around the huge upholstered headboard. The white bead board walls and door give the room a touch of coastal charm.

The rustic wood dresser has so much character.

Right down to the vignettes, this home is just filled with such wonderful texture and rustic charm with a bit of a coastal vibe…

I could move in right now! How about you? Have you seen any rooms or houses lately that you’ve fallen in ,love with?

Happy weekend!

The ombré wall project is still going… I’m hoping attempt #5 will go better than #1, 2, 3 and 4! Fingers crossed I’ll have some finished walls to show you on Monday.

Ocean-inspired gallery wall reveal

tiles close 2 A few months ago, I wrote this blog post about wanting to create an ocean-inspired gallery wall. And WOOT! It’s finally done. Another item knocked off the 2012 project to-do list – YAY! I’ll post a tutorial later this week about how I put it all together, but for today it’s just the reveal.

This is the long empty wall in the hallway that I walk by countless times a day. It’s so plain and dull and boring and naked – it was just screaming out for a little somethin’-somethin’.

blank wall

So a little somethin’-somethin’ it got with a collection of photos, prints, DIY art, and a mosaic tile. The hallway gets very little natural light and it’s too narrow to take a decent head-on shot, so they’re not the best pictures.

I  my gallery wall! But I knew I’d love it even more if it was dark grey. This is the picture at Restyling Home by Kelly that convinced me that the colour I needed was Benjamin Moore Chelsea Gray in the ulti-matte finish (that last part I decided myself).

And I was right – I my gallery wall even more now that it’s Chelsea Gray :-)

Thank god for digital cameras – it took a LOT of tries to get this head-on shot!

All of the frames are from the Ribba series at Ikea, and all the artwork was created by me or talented artisans from around the world. I posted about creating this DIY shell art a couple of weeks ago:

This is a picture that I took on the north shore of PEI that was made into a canvas by Posterjack.ca.

I took this picture at Brackley Beach in PEI – $3.00 to have it developed as a 12” x 18” photo at Costco, can’t go wrong with that!

Hubby and I bought these two prints on a trip to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia about 13 years ago.

This photo is called “Dancing Light”. I bought it from Anna’s Etsy shop my little pixels in Hobart, Tasmania.

A few more Etsy purchases – the Nova Scotia Love print is from Elizabeth’s shop Poppy and Pinecone, and the sand dollar print is from Kerrie’s shop Seawashed.

Last year when parts of Australia were hit with severe flooding, Kerri at Driftwood Interiors decided to donate proceeds from her Etsy shop sales to help the flood victims. It was the perfect time to buy her turquoise coral print that I’d had my eye on.

I had this glass tile mosaic custom made years ago. I can’t for the life of my remember who made it, just that her name was Michelle and I found her on the Internet.

I bought a set of six fish note cards two summers ago at The Maritime Painted Saltbox in Petite Riviere, Nova Scotia. I love the bright colours they add to the mostly-blue palette.

And this piece I bought at a craft show here in Ottawa last year. I’d admired these tile pieces made by Marie-Joel at L’atelier Trema at previous shows, and this one caught my eye with it’s watery colours.

This tile says it all…

I’m telling you, writing a yearly project to-do list really helps to get your butt in gear!
