Candice Tells All & Sarah Does Honeysuckle

Have you heard about Candice Olson’s new show, Candice Tells All? It debuts this coming Thursday at 8:00PM on the W Network. Here’s the show description from the W Network web site:

Candice takes viewers through the ins-and-outs of her signature makeovers while exploring a major design principle in each episode. The audience sees first-hand where Candice gets her design inspiration from and joins her as she traverses the city to see how these principles work in other mediums and art forms. Candice also gets the scoop from design industry insiders and meets up with professionals and artists doing inspiring and fabulous things beyond the world of interior design. It is a first-hand glimpse into Candice’s world, her design process and inspiration, as well as a chance to see her as we have never seen her before – up-close and personal!

And no doubt about it, Candice knows how to design a room!

Sarah Does Honeysuckle

Last night was the much-anticipated debut of Sarah 101. In case you missed it or if you don’t get Sarah 101 where you are, here’s a quick rundown (sorry about the lousy picture quality, I took pics off my TV because I couldn’t find any pics online).

Sarah and Tommy redesigned a living room/dining room in a narrow Victorian house. They started with this:

before

And ended up with this – COLOUR-O-RAMA! Notice that the original wood front door was painted a fabulous bright green. I wonder if the exterior side is the same colour…

LR DR 2

The floral fabric on the two armchairs in the LR inspired the colourful palette.

The star of the living room is the bright pink sofa with contrasting piping.

Hmmmm…. did Sarah have the inside scoop on Pantone’s colour of the year for 2011, Honeysuckle 18-2120? :-)

Sarah and Tommy found the perfect dining chairs in the perfect colour:

LR DR

Sarah created a wall of artwork with inexpensive plates that she arranged in a cascading layout:

A bit of equine chic on a fantastic Asian-inspired chest:

A daybed is an understated divider between the two spaces:

I want to know how Sarah can make such amazing second-hand finds. She must have come sort of sixth sense or something – I NEVER find such awesome stuff! The armchairs, side tables in the LR, chandelier, dining room table, colourful plates, Asian-inspired chest… all great second-hand scores.

So what did Sarah & Tommy teach us?

1. Buy pieces that are comfortable and the right proportions for your space.

2. For fresh, fun, and contemporary florals, go for over-scaled, bold, and graphic patterns.

3. A daybed as a room divider offers flexibility (you can sit on either side of it), and doesn’t distract from the site lines of the space.

4. How do you know what size area rug is right for your space? Make sure that at least the two front legs of every piece of furniture in the room sit on the area rug.

5. Sometimes you have to fix the framework before you can add the pretty, even it it isn’t in the original budget.

6. Layer your lighting – floor & table lamps, overhead ceiling lighting (on dimmers), and a chandelier give cozy light, functional light, and pretty light.

7. Look for dressmaking silk for curtains – it’s less expensive than drapery silk.. And keep silk away from touchable areas (no silk cushions).

8. Flooring in a mid-tone range will be timeless and is less likely to show furballs if you have a cat or dog.

9. The width of your dining table depends on how you like to entertain. Sarah likes enough room for place settings and lots of room down the center of the table.

If last night’s episode was any indication, Sarah 101 is going to rock big-time! And here’s hoping Candice Tells All is just as fun, colourful, and informative. Don’t forget to check her out on Thursday!

Happy New HGTV!

It’s a new year and a new line-up of shows on HGTV. Here are some of the new and returning shows debuting this week… which ones will you be watching? (Show descriptions from HGTV.ca)

Sarah 101
Tuesday @ 9:00PM

Sarah 101 is a back-to-basics crash course in design that breaks every project into simple building blocks and showcases Sarah Richardson's signature approach of tips and tricks to solve design problems so that you too can transform any room in your home!

Will anyone NOT be watching Sarah & Tommy’s new show?!

Design DNA
Tuesday @ 9:30pM

Design DNA combines the simplicity of "How It's Made", the popular manufacturing show, with high style design. This show focuses on the amazing stories of the world's most extraordinary and ordinary pieces of home design. From the first spark of conception through the trial and error of design, to the factory floor, and finally to a stunning reveal in a magnificent home, each episode features the life story of three iconic and sometimes not so iconic pieces of home design.

I’m looking forward to this new show. It sounds interesting and informative, and I like that it puts a different spin on home decor.

Professional Grade
Thursday @ 8:30PM

Homeowners sweat it out on do-it-yourself home projects and try to match wits with a panel of contractor experts as they attempt to put a price tag on their hard work. In each episode of Professional Grade, host and professional contractor, Sean Smith will be on hand to help the contestants in their quest to win big money by making smart choices and keeping the costs of their upgrades low. If they succeed in spending less than the contractor panel’s estimate, the homeowners win the difference in cash!

I haven’t seen or heard anything about this new show, other than this description from HGTV.ca. It sounds like it has potential, and it could inspire some DIY projects.

Marriage Under Construction
Monday @ 9:30PM

Marriage Under Construction 4 is a 13-part docu-soap that follows Matt and Kate's relationship, along with the struggles of building their first home together. It’s a personal and physical renovation.

I watched the first two seasons, but I just couldn’t tolerate the couple on season 3. They were beyond obnoxious, and the husband’s “I seals” T-shirt was the last straw for me (I later discovered that the husband is Chef Rodney from Steven & Chris). Hope this season’s couple doesn’t suck!

The Decorating Adventures of Ambrose Price
Wednesday @ 8:30PM

Ambrose Price is a vibrant, enthusiastic designer from Fortune Nfld; population 2000. His dream is to make it in the “big city” and become Canada’s Martha Stewart. Ambrose is coming to Toronto to work as a temp and learn from the biggest and best in the design industry. In every episode, Ambrose will face a different (and somewhat daunting) decorating challenge. Of course, getting to the top is going to take a lot of hard work and training.

Will he accomplish all of his decorating dreams? Playing on his naivety over the course of 13 different jobs and adventures, viewers are brought along for the ride. And perhaps, like Ambrose, they'll also learn a thing or two about design from the best of the best.

For Ambrose, this is a journey of decorating and self-discovery and a step closer to becoming the master decorator he's always dreamed of being.

There are no words to describe Ambrose! He’s definitely one-of-a-kind, and is probably the only person in existence with that wacky accent!

Budapest: Day 6

I’m actually back from Budapest now, but seeing as I’ve posted about days 1 to 5, I have to include day 6 too! So let’s just pretend that today is Thursday…

Whoever comes up with the forecasts at The Weather Network was SO wrong about Budapest weather this week, especially today. So much for –4 and sunny – it was more like –15 and cloudy. But that didn’t stop us from putting in another full day of exploring!

We started off with a Segway tour at 10:00AM. I totally didn’t think to get pics of us on our Segways, and the tour covered pretty much the same area we’ve already covered, so there wasn’t anything new to take pics of. Riding a Segway is a total blast, and we learned some really interesting info from our tour guide, though. Here`s something you might not know – in the movie Evita, the scene where Madonna sings “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina”, she was standing on the balcony of the Opera House in Budapest.

We popped inside the Opera House after the Segway tour to warm up a bit. This is the ceiling in the lobby:

Then we set off to look for a restaurant that I wanted to try out in the Jewish Quarter. It took forever to find the restaurant, and when we did finally find it, it was closed. ARGH! The Jewish Quarter is kind of run down, but it’s probably a colourful and vibrant area of the city when the weather is better. There used to be a large Jewish population in Budapest, but many were killed or died trying to leave Hungary during World War II. These are a couple of buildings in the Jewish Quarter…

Budapest has the second-largest Jewish Synagogue in the world (after New York City). I didn’t think we`d seen it, but I just googled it and realized that I took a picture of it without even realizing it!

After lunch, we took the subway up to the end of Andrassy utca to Szechenyi Baths, City Park, and Heroes Square. Budapest has a number of baths around the city, and Szechenyi is probably the most popular one.

We didn’t have our bathing suits with us, so we just walked around the outside of the building…

…and took a peek inside. The ceiling is beautiful.

Across the street from the baths is Vajdahunyad Castle. It was designed by Ignác Alpár and was built between 1896 and 1908. It was originally made from cardboard and wood for Hungary`s millennial exhibition in 1896, but it became so popular that it was rebuilt with stone and brick. Today it houses the Agricultural Museum.

And then we went to Hosok Ter (Heroes Square). It`s a huge square at the top of Andrassy utca. Millennium Memorial (also known as Millennium Monument or Millenary Monument) is in the center of the square and includes statues of the leaders of the seven tribes that founded Hungary in the 9th century and other outstanding figures of Hungarian history. The construction of the memorial was started when the 1000th anniversary of Hungary was celebrated in 1896, but it wasn’t finished until 1900.

If you read my previous posts about Budapest, you know that St. Stephen is an important figure in Hungary`s history. So of course his statue is in Heroes Square:

After Heroes Square, it was back on the subway to the hotel, and then out to wander around the market, which still had a bunch of booths…

I bought a huge purple pencil for my office :-)

Budapest has the prettiest manhole covers I’ve seen.

I had to buy one of these purple, white, and copper ornaments:

I wanted to buy one of these ceramic paper bags too, but sadly my willpower kicked in ;-)

Then we went to Gerbaud to buy some cake…

…and to Menza for dinner. I was totally planning to have the Hungarian cottage cheese dumplings for dessert, but I was absolutely stuffed with creamy garlic soup, a mini langos, pig`s knuckle, potatoes, a hot apple pie drink, and a sour cherry pie drink! Hey, it was our last night in Budapest, we had to live it up a bit! ;-) After dinner, we walked back to the hotel and packed for our trip back home. Good-bye Budapest, we had a great time getting to know you!

And now we`re back in Ottawa. But unfortunately, our luggage is in Germany. We barely made our connection in Frankfurt, and our luggage didn`t. When it shows up (hopefully later today), Canada Customs is going to confiscate my salami. I`m SO ticked off about that. We walked really far to buy authentic Hungarian Pick`s Salami, and now we find out we aren`t allowed to bring it into Canada. Grrrrr…. At least I get some form of payback – our luggage is filled with all our dirty clothes, so they`ll have to deal with my skanky underwear if they want my salami!

Happy 2011 everyone!
