If you watched Sarah 101 on Tuesday or read my wrap-up of the episode, you saw the plate wall that Sarah created with second-hand plates:
I’d love to hear your thoughts on plate walls – do you like them, loathe them, or are you indifferent towards them? Maybe these plate walls will help you make up your mind… how do you feel about this overlapping layout?

And the mother of all plate walls – Kelly Wearstler’s Spode plate wall at the Viceroy. I don’t want to think about the math and measuring that went into creating this layout!
So what do you think – yay or nay to plate walls?

I'm not into the plates on the wall thing. Sure, it's different, but it's just not for me. I'd rather have a great piece of artwork or framed photos. I don't even want to think about dusting all of those plates!
ReplyDeleteI have to say... sometimes I think it's charming (I like a few of the examples you found like the pink & polka-dots, and the colourful birds, and the plates/bowls on the dark wall over the hats)... but usually I'm not too crazy about it. In fact, I don't really like Sarah's version. Feels kinda fuddy-duddy. And I CAN'T BELIEVE I'm finding fault in something Sarah did!! Love just about everything else in the room, though.

Oh man...I liked it when you posted before, and now I really love it. There are so many ways you can go with this idea. And of course I love that you can just go to the thrift store and find what you need!
ReplyDeleteI'm going to say "yay" to plate walls. I do like decorative plates on a wall however, I like to see them mixed with other items - around a mirror, some on stands sitting on sconces, or on stands on a shelf mixed with other objects. Using plates as decor is certainly a great inexpensive way to inject some colour and interest into a space.
ReplyDeleteI say yay! Think it is a great look when done right!
ReplyDeleteI have an aversion to plate walls that stems from all the tacky ones my parents had hanging on the wall when I was growing up. I like the decorative ones, but it was somehow cool back in the 70s to collect plates from your travels and display them all lined up on the wall, as opposed to a collage.
ReplyDeleteGuess it all depends on the plate...
Wow! Great roundup... I think a well-done plate wall can be fabulous!
ReplyDeleteI do like plate walls. In my last house I had a Mexican inspired plate wall and loved it! Some of these are really cool - I love the green nature inspired one. It's so interesting to see the different forms these examples show - from classic symmetrical displays, to the easy flowing cascades of plates. Hmmm - I may have to reinstate the plate wall at home ...
ReplyDeleteGreat post Kelly!
Great round-up! I like them and my favourite is the blue and white ones from Decorpad. I think they work best in a kitchen or dining room.
ReplyDeleteI love the plate walls, I have Sarah 101 recorded on the DVR but haven't had a chance to watch it yet. Great to see these fabulous ideas on your blog.
ReplyDeleteOh dear Kelly, you have invested a lot of time finding all these plate walls but I must admit that I absolutely hate them. I have always hated the plates on the wall in my mother's house she hat collected through the years. I like plates on the tables but no-where else. The only example which I like as an exception is the photo with the plates and the hats - because these are vintage and not placed in a living room and such.
ReplyDeleteThe last one is my favorite!!! What beautiful walls and plates they are.
ReplyDeleteYou know I actually like some of these; in fact, some of them I like a lot. But some are just too busy. So, I guess my answer is that I don't mind plate walls but it would all depend how they related to one another. One thing I really DO NOT like is a line of plates above the kitchen cupboards. LIke any collection, they should be together not all spread out around a room :) but that might just be me :~) Some really nice examples here.
ReplyDeleteI definitely LOVE plate walls! The green plates is one of my favorites, as well as the one by KW.
ReplyDeleteHappy Friday Kelly!!

the plate wall was the one thing I really didn't like... i just can't do it. Who knows maybe it will grow on me :)
ReplyDeleteI love them! I collected a lot of Polish pottery when I lived in Europe and made several trips there. I had many plates on my kitchen walls in my old house and loved it. I don't have them out here as I have that black granite with all kinds of taupe and brown. All my pottery looked awful on the counter and I have very little wall space in my kitchen. The plates will come back somehow and somewhere!
ReplyDeleteI say YAY ! I'd be hopeless getting them all in order though ! One day I'd like a blue and white plate display !
ReplyDeleteI really like plate walls...in fact I have several plates shown in your post. If they are done properly and for the right reason, it can be a way to show off a precious collection, add colour to a wall, or just make a statement.
ReplyDeleteI love the plate walls that you have shown here!
ReplyDeleteI like them in the right atmosphere.
ReplyDeleteThe really appealing ones for me out of your entire round up are the very very symetrical arrangements, the all blue, the black and white(on white) and Kelly's enormous masterpiece.
cheers
Susan
I like it, but I think it totally depends on the context.
ReplyDeleteI like the idea generally, but it depends on the space and the plates. :-)
ReplyDeleteHappy Sunday, Kelly! Hope you're having a good one...
I like them but they have to be in the right setting with the right type of plates. Fussy, aren't I.
ReplyDeleteI think done right, a plate wall can look amazing. I think more is less when it comes to plate walls. I do really like the plate wall from Strictly Simple.
