I hope you like green, because this week’s episode of Sarah 101 features one very green kitchen and lounge! Take a look at how you can customize box store items to create a one-of-a-kind kitchen, and learn how to tie two adjoining rooms together. {Be warned, my pictures make the green look even brighter than it is in real life!}
The before pics…
Here’s Sarah & Tommy’s to-do list:
Their starting point was this retro-looking green & grey laminate countertop.
They designed a layout that’s functional and provides additional storage, without changing the size of the kitchen. They removed the existing island and replaced it with a peninsula that allows for better flow and provides more storage.
The colour palette is extended into the adjoining lounge – the fabric selection process!
They also brought the green into the lounge by painting a wide stripe up one wall, across the ceiling, and down the opposite wall. The stripe adds interest to a space that doesn’t have much architectural detailing.
I love this clock huge clock . Sarah designed the words and had them printed at a sign shop. The mechanism is from a craft store.
Ta-da!
Sarah attached a large bulldog clip to the wall above the counter to hold recipes.
The big reveal…
What did Sarah & Tommy teach us?
1. Customize off-the-rack cabinets by having the doors spray painted. The colour options are limitless, and if you ever decide you want a new colour, it’s easy to have the doors repainted.
2. To further customize a kitchen, combine white, glass & steel, and colour cabinetry.
3. Use a single flooring material in adjoining rooms to link them together.
4. If you have a low ceiling, hang curtain rods high up on the wall. This visually elevates the ceiling.
5. If you don’t have room in your kitchen for an island, try adding a peninsula. 3’ x 5’ is a good size.
6. Mix vibrant and muted colours, as well as plush, bold, and geometric fabrics.
7. Sarah’s first colour choice for the kitchen turned out to be the wrong shade of grey. The grey she chose had a green undertone. She said that she should have looked at the deepest colour on the colour chip that the colour was on to see the undertone. It’s good to know that even the experts make colour mistakes! Only the have somebody else to do the re-painting for them ;-)

Wow - great summary of the episode! I actually had a kitchen just like that (the before!) years ago. The after is SO much better and I like how she customizes Ikea cabinetry. Lots of great lessons here!
ReplyDeleteBrilliant clock !!
ReplyDeleteThe clock was fun. Wasn't sure about all of the green... but the transformation was amazing considering they didn't add to the footprint at all!!!
ReplyDeleteHow refreshing that Sarah showed a design error with the paint! No-one is above making the occassional design error, even celeb designers who have tv shows!!
ReplyDeletewow-green apple! I dont get that show-but I love Sarah so thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI did really like this episode, and once again, lots to digest! I couldn't believe the counter choice at first, it was something I would have never picked ... but in the end the room turns out fabulous as you knew it would :)

Not a big fan of the green but the makeover and your summary was great.
ReplyDeleteP.S. Sorry about the typo in my comment in prior post. Most likely not the first typo I've made here though :(
Wooo.. They used the same green and grey circles laminate counter we used... but we put it in our guest bath :P
ReplyDeleteI love Sarah. She makes it look so easy and her designs are always beautiful.
ReplyDeleteBeing a kichen designer I am always inspired by her designs. The only thing that I don't like about the show is they always use big box cabinets. It makes it seem like that is the cheapest way to go.
Small kitchen and bath shops can offer competive prices on manufactured cabinets and a free design to go with it. This can avoid costly mistakes that can blow the budget.
Sarah also usually has the cabinets painted which adds more to the price. Why not support the local designers?
Don't get me wrong I love Sarah and have followed her since the beginning of her design career. She manages to make everything look fresh without it beind too trendy. Can't wait until the next new show.
That's a good point about box store cabinets vs. small shops. I'm not so sure going with Ikea cabinetry and then having it painted is the most economical way to go.
DeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteI really love the idea of using the large bulldog clip to hold recipes/books, etc. Who is the manufacturer of the bulldog clips you used in the show? I'm having a hard time locating ones as large as the one pictured. I live in an apt with not much counter space, so these would be perfect for me. Thank you in advance.
