Bump in the bathroom reno road

Our bathroom reno is apparently stuck in limbo till I decide on the layout for the accent tiles in the shower. Although I think that’s just an excuse hubby made up so he can be lazy and stop doing all the grunge work for a while ;-) But in case he's telling the truth, HELP! I can’t decide what layout to go with. Now that the tub is being repositioned into a corner, we won’t be doing tiled niches behind it. So really, the only place where we’ll be using the beautiful blue accent tile is in the shower, and maybe on the backsplash above the vanity.

So my original plan to do this layout might have to be canned because it won’t really showcase the accent tiles:

This is how the floor tiles will be laid out – porcelain 12” x 24” dark blue-grey tiles with strips of Bianco Carrara marble creating a sort of basketweave pattern.

That would also be a lot of narrow band of accent tile, so I’m thinking I need to go with bigger bands of accent tiles in the shower. I’ve posted most of these inspiration pictures before, but here they all are in the same place – which one do you like best?

No pressure or anything, but I need you to help me decide ASAP! Which layout do you like best? Or have you seen another layout that you love and think would be perfect?

  1. I like the big wide band through the faucets and across the floor. The horizontal bands are getting a little over used. However, I do like the look of the first photo - I did something similar for a client and it looks amazing. Are you sure there's no way to still do that? I don't think you showed me that bathroom when I was over...just the samples!

  2. Bathroom reno, huh? Great and terrible all at the same time! So fun to get to change things up and you will *love* the end product...it's just all the stuff in between! (c; LOVE the floor tiles...the carrera accents totally make it and I love the idea of wide bands of accent tiles, it would look fantastic!

  6. Well I like the Drab to Fab image (with the timber table in the pic) best but I am sure you will make a great choice - dont over think it and go with your gut instinct as you are a creative so Im sure it will be spot on.

  7. Kelly, actually I like them all but I think the determining factor for me would be, what tile I would be using for the niches within the stall.
In other words do you plan to use the same tile? IF so, then you might want to consider choosing a band that would intregate them. (ie: Image by Arte Styling) Also, even the size of the stall would also influence my choice. (Whip out that brown paper or chalk and do a mock layout if need be on the wall.)

Off subject, sorry to hear about your computer woes. Hope you are able to retrieve your files. Also, am sending you a email as have a query, so would appreciate if you would check your inbox. (Thanks!) -Brenda-

    1. The blue tiles for the accent stripes are also going into the niches. I love the tiles, and really want to showcase them in the shower design. I think we now have a winner (thanks Dawna!) Hubby was working on some AutoCad drawings to design the shower tile layout - I think it's going to work out perfectly :-)

Computer is fixed and thank goodness most of the files were retrieved. Whew!

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful with your e-mail request - good luck!

  8. I agree with Brenda. Do an elevation of the bath walls...actually, all the walls...to get an idea of how all the tile layouts are going to work together. Scale is so important with these decisions! So is balance. Sketch it out and then decide.

But I love the idea of a vertical design if you can make it work!

  9. Kelly I love the first one but why don't you continue that effect by picture framing it, so add another band on the top and bottom same thickness of course as the sides. And then the regular tile inside.

  10. Vertical lines like in the first and second image look best. They seem classy and elegant. Great choice of tiles!!

  11. By the first one I meant the thick vertical side bands. Btw you can't go wrong with anything you choose it's just a personal choice.

  12. Kelly, I've always been a fan of wider sections of accent tiles. We did that in our huge shower stall in the house we built in Dawson Creek (oh about 25 years ago) :~) ... I still like the wider bands of accents. Seems a bit more "on purpose". And doesn't looks as much like a person ran out of $$. But, all that silliness said, I think this is something that comes down to what YOU two like the most and what look you're after. It's always better to go with what you see in your own mind. After all, it's you two going to live in it and love it! (from Diane Jarvis_Schuller) ... wish you lived nearby. We've invited all the neighbours over for a sneak peek of our 'new yard' -- can you make it on Sunday?

  13. I'm liking the vertical, and especially in the first photo. I also like Dawna's idea to create a frame. I think that would make a great statement...

  14. Since I have the impression that you want individuality in your bathroom, I think the vertical style would have worked for you (I adore the first and third design, by the way). Not too many have tried that design, so going with it will separate your bathroom from everyone else’s. Anyway, which one did you end up using? I hope everything went well! =)

    1. Thanks for your input, Herb. We actually are still working in the plumbing, so the tiles are still nowhere close to going up in the shower! But we've decided to combine vertical and horizontal. You can see the options we're considering in this blog post: http://jaxdoesdesign.blogspot.ca/2012/11/the-shower-tile-dilemma-solved.html
