Last Friday, I met up with Heather {Hi Heather!} from the blog Setting for Four at Starbucks/Chapters. While I tried to look cool and inconspicuous waiting for Heather, I nonchalantly flipped through a few magazines {which are conveniently located right next to Starbucks}. When I came across this kitchen, all my pretend coolness slipped away, because I’m pretty sure my mouth dropped open and my eyes popped out of my head…
Being the last person on earth without an iPhone and nothing to write on in my purse, I tried to remember something about the kitchen so I could Google it when I got home. Not a chance of remembering the designer’s name – Elina Katsioula-Beall – but I did remember DeWitt Designer Kitchens and something about it being a fairy kitchen. That was enough to find out more about this awesome colourful kitchen that won the 2012 National Kitchen & Bath Association award for Green Design.
The home owners were inspired by the work of Mexican architect Luis Barragán, who is renowned for using colour to augment space and light in his designs. They wanted to create a fantasy fairy-like garden for their two daughters – the green cabinets and bright pink countertops are meant to evoke fuchsia flower beds. And the eco-friendly flooring fits nicely with the nature theme.
A little bit of pretty turquoise around the corner – not really diggin’ the creepy figure on the counter, though!
Also designed by Elina Katsioula-Beall, this colourful bathroom won the 2012 National Kitchen and Bath Association award for small bathrooms:

Wow!!! That is a colorful house!!! I love it, but I don't think I could live in it! It might be too much on a daily basis for me. With that said though, my classroom was super colorful and I was in it everyday. Hmmmmm....

The homeowners are definitely brave and not scared of colour! I agree, the main thing is that they love it. Personally, I think it's super-cool, but I don't think I could live with it.

I'm with you there, Brenda - I couldn't live with this kitchen long-term. But it would be fun in a vacation home where you just spend a week or two at a time.

Kelly, for me, I find this is too extreme. I do love colour but this is garish -- but that's me, of course. They'd have a tough time selling this house and would either have to make some big changes in colour or bring the price down big time when the time comes. Definitely not for me -- and I actually like colour. :)

It won because you're speechless upon being in these spaces sort of like a color shock therapy lol.

Well that is a lot of colour. Definitely would get your attention. I personally couldn't live with it, but it's great that they love it. Our homes are supposed to represent ourselves so they must be a fun and colourful family!
ReplyDeleteHey Kelly - it was so much meeting you at Starbucks! I can see why this kitchen won awards, it is a clever combination of colors! It takes a talented eye to put those color tones and hues in that particular combination. While those are not colors that I could have in my home (other than pillows or accessories) I do appreciate the 'design concept'! I do believe like Lisa said that your home should represent what you love so I am sure this homeowner is very happy!
ReplyDeleteThis kitchen is ultra cool, though I have to say, its colours feel like a throw back to the '80s neon palette. I admire it for its design and forward thinking, but it's not one I could wake up to every day!

I'm not even being threatened with an iPhone! To be honest, most of the time I'm OK with not having one. But every now and then, it's a pain in the butt not to be able to connect to the Internet. I may give in one day....
