Fit to be tiled

It’s amazing how many tile choices are out there. It’s also annoying how many tile choices are out there – how do you choose?! I’ve picked up about 20 different samples for our bathroom makeover from Ceragres and Saltillo Imports, and now I need to narrow them down to a few. One thing for sure – moonstone tiles are going on the floor:

And I’d like to do a floor similar to this one in the shower using moonstone and Carrara marble tiles.

And then things get complicated – I need to choose tiles for the shower surround and the niche behind the tub and the vanity backsplash. I’d also love to do Carrara marble wainscoting, but that’s a lot of tile, and it isn't cheap. So we’ll have to see on that one.

Here are the tiles I’ve narrowed the choices down to. I use the term “narrowed the choices” loosely! I love this wavy tile, and think it would look great as the shower surround. But I also like the idea of Carrara marble… oi!

wavy tile

Here’s the wavy tile with some of the possible accent tiles. I’m seriously in love with this striped tile. It’s 6” x 24”, so there wouldn’t be a lot of grout lines, which is great for the shower – the less grout, the easier it is to keep clean!

These are moonstone & thassos “sunflower” tiles. They’d be a nice hit of pattern without being too in-your-face.

I love the sparkle of glass tile. These are two colourways – the one on the bottom would bring a little bit of goldy-green into the bathroom, which might be nice. The same goldy-green is in some of the moonstone tiles, so this glass tile would tie in nicely with the moonstone even though it’s a completely different material.

These white square mosaic tiles are so pretty – you can’t see it too well in the picture, but they literally sparkle. They also come in a large format (10” x 20”, I think), so could be used as the main tile in the shower.

Then there’s these sweet little blue mosaic tiles. The colour is a great match to the blue in the moonstone, and I love how the tiles look like square drops of water.

There are two different mosaics that include moonstone. This stacked layout:

And this circle layout.

I really like them both, but I don’t know if I want to introduce tan into the  room. If I do, then I may have to re-think the Super White quartzite for the vanity countertop, which I’m pretty  much set on.

Do you see my problem? So many beautiful tiles, so many possible combinations – I don’t know how I’m ever going to choose! Maybe if I can settle on which of these showers I like best, it’ll help me decide. I like the two vertical stripes in this shower. I think the glass tiles would be the best choice for this application.

Going back to the Sarah Richardson bathroom, I could do something similar to this shower and niche with the sunflower tiles.

I like how the accent tile in this shower wraps around the bench. I’m thinking I could do the same thing, but carry it along the floor and up the opposite wall which will have the faucet & shower head. The small blue mosaic tiles could work well here. They have a lot of grout lines, so they’d provide good traction on the shower floor.

Hmmmmm…. but now I’ve eliminated the striped tile, which I love and just HAVE to use! OMG, this is TOO HARD! Maybe it would work in the niche. Or niches. One big one or two small ones?

OK, onto the wainscoting. This one is particularly beautiful – but I’d do it in reverse, with light main tiles and dark accent tiles.

I like how the wainscoting in this bathroom is carried right into the shower. If we do Carrara marble wainscoting, the top part of the shower wall could be done in moonstone to replicate this look.

I’m also drawn to the simple tile wainscoting in these two bathrooms.

And then there’s the backsplash. I love how my friend & former blog partner Victoria carried the backsplash tile right up to the ceiling in this bathroom that she designed. She used the same tile for the accent stripes in the shower.

And this is a tiled wall I recommended for a friend & client of mine.

I’ve seen a lot of bathrooms with a low backsplash , or no backsplash at all.

I have a feeling that deciding what tiles to use and how/where to use them is going to be the biggest dilemma of this whole project. What tiles and layouts do you like best?

  1. I like the glass, striped, and little square mosaic tile options the best. I like the first, third, Victoria's, and the tiled wall you recommended for actual application ideas... Your colour palette is beautiful, and bringing in the greeny-gold that's in the glass tile could be that little added hit of warmth and glow that completes the look and feel... I would stay away from the tan unless it's in the glass tile where you get more depth in the bounce and sparkle from it. Oh boy, Kelly, what decisions you have... I can't wait to see where you go with your choices!

  2. So many tiles to choose from, for sure! Whenever I enter the tile showroom with a client, their eyes just get sort of glazed over. It is overwhelming!

I think you have a ton of great ideas started here. The one that really stands out to me is the glass linear mosaic. The colors are cheerier than the rest, and seem to match your personality better. :)

Victoria's bath looks great! I recently ran mosaics up to the ceiling in a client's bath. We used a blend of small violet glass mosaics by Sicis. Let me know if you want to see pics.

  3. At least you have it narrowed down to some FANTASTIC choices! :)
    I'm sure it'll be great.
Funny how it's always hardest to design for ourselves huh?

  4. Choosing is the worst thing as you do not want to make an expensive mistake !! I always go for "less is more" . I love the moonstone and I love the glass mosaics too. But grouting gives me the pip !!

  5. Hi Kelly, I am so happy to see we have the same taste in designers...Sarah and Candice. The blue colours remind me of the way Sarah has done a few of her bathrooms. I like those small white tiles that you said sparkle but I also like the longer blue colour tiles in the photo before. I think you were right about introducing the tan colour, I dont think its needed.
Your bathroom is going to be so beautiful and I am so glad I dont have to pick tiles any more...it probably is one of the hardest choices to make when building or renovating.

  6. Great tile and design choices. Do we have to wait for the finished bathroom reveal to see which tiles you finally choose?

    1. Thanks Maureen :-) And no, you won't have to wait till the reveal to see my final tile choices. There are a few new ones in the mix now that I'll be showing you soon - stay tuned!

  7. So many tiles to choose from!! You've got great taste and hard decisions to make! I love the wavy tile and I think my favourite of the accent tiles is the striped tile. But I also love the sparkly ones and the moonstone! Ugh, so tough! Good luck with your choices!

  8. I love where you're headed. Your first choice of wavy tile with the striped tile is definitely my favorite! I could see the stripes being in two shower niches. All your choices would be gorgeous though. I think you're definitely right about choosing big tile for the shower...the more grout, more cleaning.

  9. I agree that there are so many choices. Sometimes it is almost too many and it is difficult to narrow it down. Congratulations to you on having been able to do that. I think once you have chosen just a few, it is much easier to make a decision and I normally end up choosing what my eye keeps getting drawn back to. Good luck with your final decision, I'm sure it will be gorgeous.

  10. There are so many choices and each inspiration and each tile comparison looks so good! I can't choose!! But if i really have to.....moonstone & thassos “sunflower” tiles looks good. Like you said its not too "in your face" soft and elegant for a bathroom. Can't wait to see more :)

    1. Thanks for your feedback - I love that one too :-) I've added a few other tiles to the mix and removed some that I was considering - hoping to narrow it down to my final choices by tomorrow so we can go to the tile stores and order some tiles :-)

  12. Wow, lots of beautiful choices. I would try to narrow it down certainly. You love the moonstone, carrera, the wavy tile and the striped tile, so I would leave it to those ones only. I wouldn't introduce the tan as you've decided on the quartize and it won't go. Smaller tiles are best on shower floors as you've said and chosen. I would go with the wavy tile in the shower and the striped as it will give you the least grout lines to clean. The sunflower motif will tie in with the flooring and I would use that as the wainscotting border tile. You can go with either carrera then on the wainscotting (same as the floor) or the wavy tile (same as the shower). Does this help?

  13. Kelly- one of the things I've looked forward to the most in my life was to buy my own home, where I could change anything. After reading this post, I think you've scared me straight! Seriously, how is it possible to choose whet it's all so beautiful? I can't even choose a chocolate bar at the store, so I always leave without (indecision- also called a great diet). But knowing your talent (and how your kitchen turned out) I know whatever you decide on will be the prettiest choice! Good luck deciding, looks like you have a lot to consider here =)

  14. Something to think about using large tiles in the shower. yes, less grout means less cleaning, but less grout also means more slipping.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yep, that's very true - the large tiles will be on the walls, and I'll be using small tiles on the floor to minimize the slippiness :-)

  15. They are all beautiful choices Kelly. The only thing that I am going to mention is; because this is a Master Bath and will be used more frequently I would be cautious where you are applying the Carrara Marble whether it be polished or honed, sealed or not. From the research that I have done I understand it readily stains. (Hard water marks, shampoo, makeup and such). Plus I have heard it has even been known to change its colour over time and I am just thinking about you pairing it up with something made-made which in all probability will not.
Hope that helps a tad with your decision making. :) -Brenda-

    1. Thanks for the info about Carrara marble, Brenda. I know it's prone to staining and scratching, but I didn't know that it may change colour over time. That's definitely something to keep in mind.

  16. I know exactly how you feel. When I was deciding on what backsplash tile to use in my kitchen, it took me about 4 mths to finally make a decision. I still have all the samples to prove it :) Can't wait to see what you do!

  17. Your choice should definitely be based on your feel and style, but let me just note that square and rectangular tiles would be easier to install than those with irregular shapes, while larger tiles are easier to install than smaller ones. It would also be important to choose a floor tile that can stand up to the daily wear and tear of your household.
