Something a bit different today – you may have heard of Movember, where men grow moustaches to raise money for men’s health issues, in particular pancreatic cancer. Well, a group of ladies in Ottawa called the Unshaven Mavens are doing the equivalent for women – October is Grow Your Pits for Tits month!
The Unshaven Mavens are going through the month of October without shaving their armpits. All money raised will go to Rethink Breast Cancer:
Launched in 2001, Rethink is the first-ever Canadian breast cancer charity to bring bold, relevant awareness to the under-40 crowd; foster a new generation of young and influential breast cancer supporters; infuse sass and style into the cause; and, most importantly, respond to the unique needs of young (or youngish) women going through it.
Why unshaved armpits?
My colleague and co-founder, Malorie Bertrand and I came up with the idea back in 2010 some time around Movember. We both thought it would be great if there was an equivalent event for women. While thinking of what body part we would ask women to grow, we came across the information that swollen lymph nodes under the arm can be a sign of breast cancer. We then did some research on the different charities that existed and found Rethink Breast Cancer. Their fear-free approach to fundraising and their under 40 target made them the ideal partner.

You can read more about the Unshaven Mavens here.
At the end of October, the Unshaven Mavens celebrate their accomplishments at the Red CarPIT Bash and Mavens compete to determine who takes home prizes for “Pit Boss” (most funds raised), “Most Pitiful” (least hair growth), “Jolie Pit” (nicest pit), “Brad Pitt” (most hair growth) and the “Best Pit Crew” (most funds raised by a team).
My goal is to raise $500.00. More would be even better! I would love it if you would help support me and my hairy pits by making a donation to the cause. Click here to go to my donation page. You’ll receive a tax receipt for a donation of $20 or more. But every little bit helps, even a dollar!
CANCER SUCKS. Let’s give it a big kick in the butt!

Oh my! This is such a great idea and very attention grabbing which is what is needed! I love all the prize names and can just imagine how they are going to decide/measure etc.
