Stunning Santorini

My friend Maureen from the blog Maureen at Modecor Muses is in the middle of an exotic cruise holiday. She’s visiting Greece, Croatia, and Italy. I’m sooooo envious after seeing this picture that she posted on her Facebook page…

Once upon a time, there was an island in the Agean Sea called Thera. In 1646 BC, a massive volcanic eruption blew out the interior of the island, creating a geological caldera. Now called Santorini, a giant central lagoon that’s about 12 x 7 kms (7.5 x 4.3 miles) is surrounded on three sides by 300m (980ft) steep cliffs. A small island on the fourth side separates the lagoon from the Agean Sea. Mild volcanic activity after the major eruption built up two small islands in the lagoon (Palea and Nea Kameni).

Fira has been the capital of Santorini since the early 19th century. It’s perched on the edge of a 260m high cliff.

Part of Fira was destroyed by an earthquake in 1956, and only a small number of the 18th century buildings were saved. Today, Fira is filled with white-painted houses on stepped streets, blue-domed churches, and sun-drenched verandas.

There may be no better place on earth to watch the sunset than from a romantic table for two on a terrace in Santorini…

  2. Gorgeous pictures.. Santorini is one place I have been. It is so unique, all the little steps up and down everywhere and everything white. I stayed in a little fishing village at the base of Oia. Bliss! Rachaelxx

Kelly, so crazy, I totally remember your quatrefoil post once I went back to it. Kind of embarassing, I MUST have subconciously remembered the title of your post cause how else could I have named it that?? Geesh, must be messy in my brain, lol.

  6. My husband and I took a cruise out of Venice to the Greek Isles and Croatia (3 yrs ago). It was magical and beautiful and one stop (Mykonos) we rented four wheelers and toured the island ourselves and on another (Olympia) we rented scooters and went off to discover on our own. It was a fabulous trip and I just know that Maureen is going to hate to leave.

  8. Wou Kelly! Stunning pictures! That cobalt blue is so inspiring! I'd love to go cruising around the Greek Islands. There's one which seems almost mythological to me: Pathmos. Hope to go there one day. Meanwhile... thanks for making me travel far! Excellent weekend! XoXo

  10. I think I went on the same cruise she is on! We started in Venice, went to several Greek islands and then to Dubrovnik, Croatia! It was the trip of a lifetime! Santorini was my favorite. We sat on a restaurant balcony overlooking the volcano rim drinking wine and eating cheese... heaven!!!!

  13. Beautiful! I love the blue and white. It reminds me of an awesome Greek restaurant in Montreal called Trinity, with the same colour palette, big blue door, white walls.... *sigh* I think I'll have to go next time I'm in Montreal...
