One thing I love to do at the cottage is read. I usually have a big pile of home decor magazines to get through by this time of the year, but I seem to have caught up on most of my magazine reading (unless I put a pile somewhere that I forgot about).
A few weeks ago, I saw a preview for a movie called The Help, based on the book by Kathryn Stockett.
The three main characters are amazing women who take a huge risk in order to tell the story of what life was like for “the help” in Jackson, Mississippi in the 1960s. The movie is coming out in August, but I decided not to wait for the movie and buy the book. I was hoping it would get me through a good part of the summer, but I love the book so much I pick it up every chance I get! It’s funny, sad, hopeful, and completely enthralling.
Have you read any good books lately?

"The Help" is one of my all-time favorite books! I read it in 3 days... couldn't put it down! I'm afraid to see the movie, because the book was so good.
ReplyDeleteI recently read "Unbroken." A completely different sort of book, but absolutely amazing!
This was one of my favorite books in the last several years. I'm with Carolyn, I'm almost afraid to see the movie, but I think I will chance it. If you want a funny one to read, try Georgia Bottems, by Mark Childress. It's a hoot. Kat
ReplyDeleteThis is one that I'm planning to read too but right now I'm reading the series of The Games of Thrones. I'm on book #2, and they're great!
ReplyDeleteYes, loved this one.
ReplyDeleteI'm almost finished Nicholas Delbanco's "Running in Place" about his years and times in Provence. Wonderful, wonderful! I'm doing a post on it next week!
I would love to read this book before seeing the movie!! It looks like it's going to be a very good one. And the book is always better than the movie isn't it?? I am reading the Happiness Project and it is sooo good!

I am halfway thru The Help, am loving it! I won't see the movie, I never do if I liked the book, the movies almost always ruin it for me.
ReplyDeleteI'll likely take mindless James Pattersons or the like to the beach, and magazines too.

ReplyDeleteOutside of my morning paper and blog reading, the only chance I seem to have to read books is when I'm on vacation. I think I need one in order to curl up with The Help. I saw the movie previews too and it looks like a good movie. Like you, I'd like to read the book first. Last book I picked up that I hated to put down was The Kite Runner.
ReplyDeleteI LOVED that book and I still can't believe it was her first book. I'm anxiously awaiting the next one.
