Livin’ on the edge

There’s something about live edge furniture that’s so appealing. It’s almost like having a tree right there in your house, and it gives you the opportunity to really appreciate the beauty of nature. I just love the grains and knots and imperfections in a raw piece of wood. How gorgeous are these walnut pieces…

Live edge dining tables are a great way to enjoy a big slab of natural wood in your home. They look equally fabulous surrounded by earthy elements like stone and more wood…

…as they do accompanied by modern chairs and decor.

Another great place to enjoy live edge wood is in the kitchen. Either as a table…

…or an island.

A really rough live edge coffee table gives this  a seating area a rustic, earthy vibe.

A sleeker live edge table fits right into this more funky, retro room.

Love the combination of wood and metal.

And some other applications for live edge wood. Curvy legs give this console a more traditional and refined look.

The live edge wood ledge adds warmth and texture to this modern clean-lined space.

Very cool bathroom with a plaster wall and live edge wood vanity. Pretty cool wall sconces too! With the proper finish, wood will stand up to the inevitable water splashes.

Live edge wood looks great everywhere else in the house – why not the bedroom?! Just be careful about bumping your head in the middle of the night ;-)

Bake-N-Blog Holiday Edition, Part 2

BB tools cookies in motionNow that both the Canadian & American Thanksgiving festivities are over (Happy belated T-Giving to my US friends!), you know what time it is…. yep, it’s time to pull out the cookie sheets and baking dishes and whip up some Christmas cookies! And what better way to get your creative baking juices flowing than by participating in Bake-N-Blog Holiday Edition, Part 2! If you participated in last year’s holiday edition or in Staci’s instalments of the original Bake-N-Blog, you know what to do. And if you’re new to B-N-B, all you have to do is choose a Christmas cookie recipe from a cookbook or online or from your own recipe collection, bake it, and blog about it. That’s it! Well, OK, so you have to take pictures of the baking process and the final result before all the goodies get gobbled up – actually, that might be the hardest part of the whole thing!

Here’s the scoop…

  1. Pick a recipe.
  2. Leave a comment on this post and let me know what you’re going to bake.
  3. Sometime between now and the Official Bake-N-Blog Holiday Edition Day of Wednesday, December 14th, whip up a batch of your selected cookies. Don’t forget to take pictures!
  4. Write a blog post about your baking experience. Was the recipe easy or hard to follow? Did you like the results? Would you recommend the recipe to a friend?
  5. On Wednesday, December 14th, upload your Bake-N-Blog post to your blog. And let the party begin! I’ll add Mr. Linky to my Bake-N-Blog party post on the morning of December 14th, and then you can link up your post and make the rounds to see what all the other participants baked.

It’s that easy! The hardest part will be deciding what to make. These are a few goodies I found over at Tastespotting, which is a great recipe resource. If you do a search for “Christmas”, you’ll get 22 pages of recipes.

A couple of other great recipe web sites are allrecipes.com and Epicurious. There’s definitely no shortage of buttery, sugary, decadent Christmas concoctions out there!

To make it all official and everything, here’s a button that you can add to your sidebar and link it to this post. I have no idea how to create an actual functioning button, so just add this URL as HTML link to the image: http://jaxdoesdesign.blogspot.com/2011/11/bake-n-blog-holiday-edition-part-2.html
